and part of this movement. the author of the legacy of martin luther king jr.. quite frankly, i could not have imagined myself the professor of history at stanford university editing martin luther king. these are things that were beyond my imagination as a young black teenager whose opportunities were quite limited at that time. >> because of that opel vision and the moral imagination, barricades began to fall and bigotry began to fade. doors of opportunity swung open for an entire generation. >> he was very much influenced by martin luther king and in his heart, he sees his vision being close to martin luther king. there was that moment where he received the nobel peace prize and he made the distinction between, saying that he can't be like them because i have to deal with this radical evil called terrorism. as if they did not have to deal with the radical evil of their time. king never held political office. i assume if he had, he would have seen as his overriding responsibility to deal with the people at the bottom of the social structure, the people that don't have the opportunity

's actually the 84th anniversary of doctor martin luther king's birth. many people know who doctor king was, a clergyman, activist, husband, father, the most prominent promoter of nonviolence and civil disobedience; he received the nobel peace prize in 1964 in recognition of his nonviolence. only we discussing assault weapons ban ammunitions but acknowledging that today would have been doctor martin luther king's 84th birthday, a very prolific activist. i would like to recognize and former city employee and decorated soldier mr. hillyer terry, born june 4, 1923. while attending college he was drafted to serve in world war ii; he served the united states army from 1943 to 1946 where he received an honorable discharge; he was awarded the american theater campaign medal; the eaim campaign medal with four bronze stars, good combat medal, world war ii victory medal. he was the city and county employee for 33 years and retired as a trusted supervisor for the san francisco municipal transportation agency. he leaves behind a wife as well as his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildre

's the 50th anniversary of the "i have a dream" speech by dr. martin luther king. it's also on martin luther king holiday. what's the mood there in washington? >> well, i have to tell you, it's a little quiet. i walked by the white house earlier today, and they were still putting up the reviewing stand. there were some folks there. some, you know, very excited. talking to the cab driver on the way over here to the studio tonight, he's saying, yeah, it seems really quiet. i mean, people are definitely coming into town and congress members say they've gotten rid of all the tickets. that they had more people asking for tickets than they could help. so, i mean, but there's no question that it is a little subdued compared to four years ago. last time, of course, there was a new president, new first family. it was a historic election. i think this time it's a little more subdued because there's a little more realism and the level of hope and the expectations are a little lower which may, in fact, be helpful to barack obama in his second term because the expectations the first time were just so sky

to be martin luther king, the holiday that celebrates his legacy. the senate historian gave a historical perspective. health varioust variou presidents treat the de. >>-- the various ways presidents treat the day. >> the constitution rights of the oath of office. -- rights out the oath of office. -- writes out the oath of office. most presidents say, "so help me god." there was a tradition, a folklore that developed that washington said, "so help me god." we as historians have been looking for any possible resource. we're not sure about this. one of the accounts was given to us by washington irving. he gave his ramparts that washington said, -- rememberance that washington said, "so help me god." most presidents in the 19th century did not repeat the oath of office. they just said, " i do," at the end of the oath. ,tarting about the 1880's presidents began to say, "so help me god." the chief justice who swears the men inevitably says -- them in inevitably says, "so help me god." it has become tradition. tradition is much more important than even constitutional structure in this process.

obviously because it's the birthday of dr. martin luther king, jr., we remember who was killed by an act of gun violence. so they're giving $200 out per gun. they have some other stipulations here. and just one more thing. it says the county has contributed $10,000 from its trust fund, and there's additional money. it's like an ongoing thing with them. but particularly because it's opening to residents of san francisco county and i can't help but think all of this was sparked by our own gun buy-back program. we have something rolling and looks like other focuses will pick up on it. and furthermore i will just say this. in the spirit of the cooperation that was done with the gun buy-back in december between -- or a month, the programs, the community programs in san francisco and oakland and the departments in san francisco and oakland, i think we should continue that spirit, because guns travel. so we can get the word out about this one also to the citizens of san francisco, and to everybody, i think maybe we can get some more guns out of the hands of people. so i just want to mention tha
